A Walk Through History — Preserving the Legacy of St. Luke’s Since 1953
St. Luke’s Hospital is fondly remembered as “German Davakhana” due to its rich history and German origin. It was established in 1953 and initially managed by the Sisters of Medical Mission Secular Institute (MMSI), Germany. In 1989, the hospital’s management was officially handed over to the Sisters of Charity of St. Anne (SCSA). The foundation for the hospital was laid in 1952 by Fr. Mayer S.J., Br. Herbert S.J., and their team from the Jesuits of Pune Province. The inaugural service in 1953 was conducted by five sisters led by Sr. Christine Ott (MMSI) and two German doctors, Dr. Betz and Dr. Kronschnabi, along with the Jesuit fathers. The hospital began with 25 beds, an OPD, laboratories, and operation and labour rooms. With growing patient needs, it quickly expanded into a 200-bed facility. Several doctors from Wurzburg, Germany served with dedication. Dr. Peter Rohde (1968–1971) streamlined the hospital’s documentation and introduced structured case papers and standard protocols. Soon, Indian doctors joined the mission. Dr. K.V. Bhabor from Madhya Pradesh served for 10 years (1963–1973) and was a crucial link between German doctors and local patients. In 1971, Dr. Anil U. Masukar (General Surgeon) and his wife Dr. Sumati Masukar began their selfless service, continuing until 2013. They were later joined by several specialists including Dr. S.P. Rathod (Orthopaedic), Dr. S.V. Nene (Paediatrician), Dr. S.S. Patgaonakar (Physician), and Dr. Prakash (Gynaecologist). Over the decades, the hospital introduced advanced medical services: – Sonography department and CCU – Dialysis unit (installed in 2012) – New departments for Dental, Physiotherapy, Dermatology, Psychiatry, ENT, and Cath Lab (prior to COVID) – A modern 12-bed ICU with advanced ventilator support (since 2017) St. Luke’s Hospital continues to serve the people of Shrirampur and nearby regions with compassionate and affordable healthcare, keeping in mind the growing needs of the community.
